If you have an upcoming car insurance policy expiring soon, here is what you need to know about renewing your car insurance online through the ICBC website.
Before March 2022, you had to visit an ICBC insurance broker to renew your car insurance. This meant taking time away from your day to visit their office or book an on-site insurance consultation.
Now, many British Columbians have the option to renew their car insurance online. It’s such a convenient way to renew your insurance; it’s a wonder we didn’t have this sooner.
Before renewing, here are 5 things you need to do before renewing your car insurance online:
Look at your license plate expiry sticker or your current auto insurance papers (which should be kept in your glove box). You are eligible to renew your policy no earlier than 44 days in advance of your expiry date.

Renewing your car insurance online gives you access to a variety of payment options:
ICBC will also send you a printable PDF receipt of your insurance documents as proof that your full payment, or payment plan, was processed successfully.
The benefit of having an online option for renewing your car insurance is that you don’t have to travel to a local auto broker during business hours to renew. You can renew from your computer nearly any time of day. The exception is between 12 am and 5 am daily, when the system is closed for maintenance and processing.
You may qualify for a discount on your car insurance.

Ask your insurance broker about what discounts you may be eligible for.
Step 1: Login – Start by visiting the ICBC online car insurance renewal website. You can log in with your BC Services Card App or your banking credentials (through Verified.Me).
Step 2: Confirm coverage and policy details – After logging in, you’ll see a list of the most recent insurance brokers you’ve dealt with. Choose your preferred insurance provider so they can reach out to you if they have any questions about your policy.
Then, you’ll review your previous policy. You can confirm policy details or contact your preferred insurance broker to make changes.
Once satisfied, you can pay for your year in full by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. If you wish to make monthly payments, have a cheque or your banking details handy to enter into the system. If you previously had a payment plan, you can review and accept or change your banking details and payment options.
Step 3: Print insurance documents – Once you’ve paid, you can print a copy of your insurance documents. Always leave a copy in your vehicle. Unlike in the past, you don’t need an updated license plate sticker.
Step 4: Drive – With your new insurance papers in your car, you can drive around knowing you’re protected.
During this process, you may select a local broker for your account. They will contact you directly if there are any problems with your insurance application.
Your right and option to speak to an insurance broker if you wish hasn’t changed in this new online car insurance renewal process.
